27/10/14 - Choosing my topic
We already received instructions on what we need to do first to start the personal project which is to brainstorm ideas of what topics we would like to do on the personal project. After I did the brainstorm I decided that my topic will be to learn how does the C-brace works, its functions and the benefits on people that use it. I decided to choose this topic because the C-Brace is an orthotic that helps me to walk but I don't know how does it work. I need the help of this brace to be able to walk because back in 2010 I had a surgery in my hip to remove a tumor where my left pelvis was removed and areas of my left leg nervous system got damaged disabling my capacity to move this leg.
Skills:
Critical thinking: I identified problems and develop aims, goals and objectives.
Creative thinking: I used Brainstorms and maps thoughts to create ideas and questions.

05/11/14 - First supervisor meeting
Today was the first meeting with my advisor which is Mr Lafferty. He told me that my topic was good but that I needed to figure out a way in which i can assess if i really accomplish my goal which is to learn how does the C-brace works its functions and the benefits on people that use it. I came up with the idea of giving a class to a group of people studying engineering in Colombia about the C-Brace to show that I really learned about the C-brace. Mr Laffertey told me It was a good way of assessing my accomplishment so this was the final outcome:

10/11/14 - C-Brace Application
Today I found out that there is an application on the appstore and android store made by ottobock of the C-brace. The name of the app is: Ottobock Augmented Reality APP. The purpose of the application is to be able to see the C-brace from any angle with a 3D image. The app also shows each action that the C-brace allows the user to make such as walking, sitting or going up or downstairs. This app might help me understand how does the C-brace works and it's functions so i will definetly try it.

12/11/14 - Research for final product/outcome
Today I made a research on where I could give the class about the C-brace and I found three possible options. I found out that the places where I could give classes to people studying biomedical engineering in cali are the universidad autonoma de occidente, universidad santiago de cali and the hospital universitario. I will make contact with my physiatrist (Dr. Enrique Estevez) which is associated with the hospital universitario and I will ask him if there is the possiblity to give a class there or if he could give me the name and info of another person which I could contact to be able to know where I could give the class. I know that he has mates wich give classes to the universidad autonoma so maybe he could help me get in contact with them.

16/11/14 - Instructions manual
Today I looked at the instructions manual which was given to when I received the C-Brace. I found some interesting thing on this 64 pages notebook. I found out that the C-Brace is the first orthotronic mobility system (OMS) with a microprocessor - Controlled hydraulic knee joint system that allows selective control of both swing and stance phases of gait. This means that the C-Brace has a microprocessor which allows the user to control the balance and support while walking. I also found out that the C-Brace is programmed with a computer to able to monitor and change the dynamic control of walking to promote a safer walking pattern for the patient. The microprocessor inside the brace controls an hydraulic valve via the measured inputs of the knee angle and ankle (e.g. moments, movements, directions, velocities and accelerations). In one page of the manual (pg 8) there was a diagram showing all the components of the C-Brace:

20/11/14 - Ottobock official web page
I found the Ottobock official page which is the german company that made the C-Brace. In this web page there was a big amount of useful information on how did the C-Brace worked and it's benefits. I found out that the C-Brace is not Bionic but orthotronic which is different. The orthotronic term means that the C-brace combines electric and mechanic systems which gives the advantage of giving the user a more smooth and natural motion of walking. The field of Orthotronics was created by applying mechatronics (mechanical, electronic, computer, systems design and other engineering disciplines) to the field of custom orthotics. This resulting synergy has created an entirely new approach to supporting people with limited mobility. There is an interactive diagram of the C-Brace on the web page where it shows many characteristics of this brace which are the following:
1. Custom fit to you:
It is made of a lightweight carbon fiber thigh shell which is shaped to fit you.
2. Adapts automatically:
The microprocessor controlled C-Brace, unlike traditional locking knee joint systems, makes sure it is stable when you need it, and swings freely when you are ready to take a step.
3. Measures your motion:
A knee angle sensor built into your orthosis gathers data about your movements so the C-Brace microprocessor can respond to keep your walking stable and secure.
4. Fits your form:
The shape of the calf shell is based on a cast so it matches your shape.
5. Integrated information:
The built-in ankle moment sensor captures information and sends it to the microprocessor to be analyzed. The microprocessor uses this information to optimize the resistance of the brace in real time to best support you.

I also found that the C-Brace was not only designed for people with hip and partial paralysis problems but also for people living with spinal injury, post-stroke and post-polio syndrome.

26/11/14 - Reviewing C-Brace instructions manual
Today I reviewed the C-Brace instructions manual and I found new useful data. I found out that the C-Brace has a sensor on the knee which angle changes in both directions (i.e flexion and extension) and velocity (i.e variable cadence) These sensors are monitoring and measuring changes at 50 times per second. This means that the C-Brace is constantly monitoring all changes while the user is walking in order to get a smooth and natural walk. It is important to mention that I also found out that thanks to the C-Brace the biomedic engineer can control the 8 fases lf gait in the patient.

04/01/15 - C-Brace: What's inside
Today I started to work on my personal project again as I didn't had time to work on it on december. I found out the components inside a C-Brace on a diagram inside a brochure which was on the ottobock web page. Click here to see the file. The diagram showed me the location of the microprocessor and the knee angle sensor on the C-Brace. The diagram also showed me that the C-Brace battery is a Li-Ion battery which means that the C-Brace battery can produce voltages of 1.5 v (comparable to a zinc–carbon or alkaline battery) to about 3.7 v. Thanks to the diagram I was able to know that there is an ankle moment sensor which send sygnals to the knee sensor. This ankle moment sensor helps the brace to know when to lock the knee and when to unlock to be able to give the step.

16/01/15 - Hanger Inc. Opinion on the C-Brace
Today I was searching on the web about the C-Brace and I found the offical page of Hanger clinic. Hanger clinic is a business unit of Hanger Inc. which a U.S company which designs and creates prosthetics and orthotics. Hanger clinic the company which fits the C-Brace to people on the United states, In fact I was in one of the clinics on tamarac, Florida when I received the C-Brace and tried it on. I think it is important to investigate about the C-Brace from other sources such as a recognized company like Hanger Inc. and not only get information from ottobock which is the company who made the brace. This is important because i will be able to see the opinions of others experts about he topic and not only the ottobock opinion on their own product. In the Hanger clinic web page I found out that the C-Brace causes this positive effects on the user:

- Reduce risk of falling
- Minimize chronic effects of asymmetrical limb challenges
- Maintain and/or improve daily activity levels
- Maintain overall physiological health and independence in activities in daily living
Another thing I found out which think it is very important is that the C-Brace design was based on a prosthetics for amputees called the C-Leg. This prosthetics is considered by many experts as on of the best (if not the best) prosthetic for people with one leg. I think that this information might be very important for future investiagation on my personal project.

04/02/15 - Second supervisor meeting
Today was our second advisor meeting. Last week I didn't work much since I was in the guajira trip but I showed Mr Lafferty my progress so far and he told me I had been working well. He told me that it was a good idea to do the interview and he also said that it was ideal if I researched on how to do a proper interview. I also showed him my process journal and he told me it was good. I need to keep researching and start planning for final product/outcome and it is important to keep in mind that I shouldn't get all the investigation of the C-Brace from the instructions manual. It is very important that I find out why did my parents decided to buy this orthotic instead of any other (What differences this orthotics from others?)
Skills:
Organizatin: I show this by Keeping to class schedules and project deadlines and by arriving to class with the appropriate equipment.
Communication: I Give and receive appropriate feedback from my supervisor and I negotiate ideas and knowledge with him.

Today was our third advisor meeting and unfortunately it was just one week after the second meeting and I had not progressed at all. I told Mr Lafferty that I had nothing new since the last meeting and he told me it was ok but that I should keep working so I don't stay behind. We filled a paper called the academic honesty form were I record my progress and the nature of my discussions with my supervisor. Mr lafferty filled one of the 3 meetings that should be recorded to show my process during the personal project.

16/02/15 - improving my interview skills
Today I researched on how to do a good interview and I found many interseting things that I could use for my interview with my orthopedic oncologist. I found an aticle from Columbia university which gave me many tips such as: Prepare carefully, familiarize yourself with as much background as possible, Establish a relationship with the source conducive to obtaining information, Ask questions that are relevant to the source and that induce the source to talk and Listen and watch attentively. I found out that it is extremely important to prepare the questions and that in my case I need to give direct questions to show that I know about the topic and that im not clueless and waiting for the interviewee to do all the work for me. This are the steps I should follow during the interview:
1. Identify himself or herself at the outset of the interview.
2. State the purpose of the interview.
3. Make clear to those unaccustomed to being interviewed that the material will be used.
4. Tell the source how much time the interview will take.
5. Keep the interview as short as possible.
6. Ask specific questions that the source is competent to answer.
7. Give the source ample time to reply.
8. Ask the source to clarify complex or vague answers.
9. Read back answers if requested or when in doubt about the phrasing of crucial material.
10. Avoid lecturing the source, arguing or debating.

Knowing this information I am pretty sure that I can have a flawless interview with my orthopedic oncologist. I need to plan what I will say and the questions before the interview.

20/02/15 - Why the C-Brace and not other orthotic?
Today I was wondering why did my parents decided to give me the C-Brace instead of many other options possible on the market and they told me all the story. When I had my surgery to remove the tumor, part of the left hip was removed and the nerves of the leg got blocked avoiding any movement. The inicial plan recommended by most of the doctors was to cut the leg and find a orthesis which will cover from the hip to the feet so my parents started to investigate which was the best option. On 2010 I went to U.S with my parents to talk to many experts on which was the best option for my disability. There where different opinions but most of them thought that the best option was an orthesis called the C-Leg made by ottobok. after that trip I my parents and me were more focused on getting physically better so we didn't talked about the topic of amputation for a long time. On 2012-2013 my mum found out that the C-Leg had a "brother" called the C-Brace which used the same mechanism and system of the C-Leg but the difference was that it was and orthotic which meant that there was no need of cutting my leg. My parents started to investigate about the topic and found a facility in tamarac,Florida where I could be fitted with the C-Brace so we went there. After several months of thinking it, my parents and I decided that this was the best option since most of the experts we met back in 2010 recommended the C-Leg and the C-Brace worked the same. On july 2013 I was finally fitted with the C-Brace.
Skills:
Communication: I used this skill since I heard my parents story and use dactive listening techniques to understand.
Reflection: This skill was used when I decided to reflect on how was the process of the fitting of the C-Brace

24/02/15 - Orthopedic oncologist response
Today I called my orthopedic oncologist Dr. Daniel Delavega to tell him about the interview I was planning to do and the purpose of it which it was to know in which ways did the C-Bace have helped my health. I decided to call him since he didn't received my mail so all this time he wasn't aware of the interview which was disappointing because the interview could have done earlier. I talked to him and he told me there was no problem and that we could arrange a meeting for next march. I still need to plan the questions of the interview but I have the feeling that I have my interview skills much more stronger thanks to the research I did about it.
Skills:
Affective: This skill was used because I dealt with disappointment in a proper way and saw the positive side of it which was that I had more time to improve my interview skills.
Creative thinking: I demonstrate this skill by Seeing possibilities, problems
and challenges positively.

28/02/15 - An unexpected problem
Today I contacted Dr. Enrique Estevez to ak him if he met with Dr. Wilfred Agredo Rodriguez. He told me that we wasn't able to see him because probably he was out of the city and he wouldn't come after a few days. This is really disappointing since I was expecting to talk to him this week to plan the class. The faster I arrange the class, the better beacause I will have more time to plan what I will say. I hope to be able to contact him before April.
Skills:
Transfer: I showed this skill by practising on dealing with disappointment and unmet expectations.

04/03/15 - Fourth supervisor meeting
This wednesday was our fourth supervisor meeting and I told Mr Lafferty what I had advanced since our last meeting on 11/02/15. I told Mr Lafferty that I had improved my interview skills and I was ready to the interview but I hadn't arranged the interview with my doctor. I also told him that I found out why did my parents decided to give me the C-Brace instead of any other orthotic. Last but not least, I told him that I was already planning my final product but I have had some problems for example the fact that I was unable to contact the director of biomedical engineering of the universidad autonoma de occidente. Mr Lafferty told me that I had done good job and that I needed to have an in depth plan of how my final outcome should be. Our next meeting is assumed to be next wednesday but in that date I will be in rehearsal for the school musical so im not sure if we could meet that day. If I can't meet that day, I will have to plan another date for our fifth advisor meeting.
Skills:
Organizatin: I show this by Keeping to class schedules and project deadlines and by arriving to class with the appropriate equipment.
Communication: I Give and receive appropriate feedback from my supervisor and I negotiate ideas and knowledge with him.
Affective: I show this skill by seeking out criticism and feedback from others which in this case was my supervisor.

06/03/15 - The difference between the C-Brace and other orthotics
In 20/02/15 when my parents told me that most of the professionals I met in U.S on 2010 said that the best option was the C-Leg which uses the same technology as the C-Brace I kept thinking on why was the C-Brace my the best option so today I researched about it. I found out that While conventional orthoses are used only for locking and releasing the knee joint, the C-Brace reacts intelligently to the entire sequence of movement. It is the world's first orthosis system with stance and swing phase control. The C-Brace can adapt to routine situations and help the user achieve much more mobility for example when switching from walking at a rapid to a slower pace, or when stopping at a red light. It is important to metion that the orthotic also works for descending stairs step over step, walking on uneven ground, and flexing under load more closely approach natural movement. I think this information can be used for the presentation of the final product.

08/03/15 - Arranging interview date and planning questions
Today I made the questions for the interview following the data I found out on how to do a good interview. I had to take into account that the question needed to be about a very specific concept to show that I know about the topic and that im not clueless about it. This is how the questions turned out:
Skills:
Creative thinking: I used this skill to formulate the questions for the interview.
Transfer: I showed this skill by thinking on which were the most suitable questions for my doctor to answer.
Organization: I used this skill to structure the questions appropriately.

10/03/15 - Unable to do the interview due to my lack of planning
Today I was going to do the interview but I could due to my lack of planning. The problem was that I took into account that today I had school musical rehearsal all the day and tomorrow is the first performance so I wasn't able to leave. I talked to Dr Delavega and apologized for not being able to go and I planned the interview for next tuesday 17/03/15 which is a day I am completely sure I don't have any plans for the afternoon. I should have revised that in this date I didn't have anything that would intervene with the interview to avoid a problem like this. I need to improve my organization to avoid this kind of problems in the future.
Skills:
Reflection: I used this skill to identify my mistake which was lack in organization and by planning on avoid problems such as this one in the future.

Today I had an appointment with Mrs. Cosh to talk about my final product. I told her that I was very stressed since I had to have the personal project finished for 17/04/15 and I still haven't completely planned my final product because I was unable to contact the Director of biomedical engineering of the universidad autonoma de occidente and I was not sure if I could do the class in the university. She told me that there were other possiblities if I wasn't able to contact him until it was too late to arrange a class. She said that I could film the class and send it to him so he shows it to the class so in that case it wouldn't be necesary to arrange a specific date in the university. Mrs. Cosh also told me that I had to add some more things on the process journal such as evaluationg sources where I am getting the information but that I was on the right track and that I should keep working.
Skills:
Critical thinking: I used this skill to Identify problems and develop aims, goals and objectives.
Creative thinkig: I used this skill by showing that I am considering all alternatives for my final product and I am generate “what if?” questions.
Communication: I Gave and received appropriate feedback.

20/03/15 - Orthotronic Technology
Today I found new information about the C-Brace. I found out that the C-Brace is the first orthopedic system to use orthotronic technology. Orthotronic technology was created by applying mechatronics (mechanical, electronic, computer, systems design and other engineering disciplines) to the field of custom orthotics. This combination has created a better way of supporting people with limitations. This technology now facilitates people to walk more naturally and efficiently without having to rely on a locked knee joint for stability. The C-Brace is the first system on the market to use advanced sensor arrays, microprocessor controls, and management of the gait cycle to improve the person’s walking ability. This information could be used in the introductions of the C-Brace presentation I am planning to do on the Universidad autonoma de occidente.

29/03/15 - Investigating on how to do a good powerpoint presentation and a survey
Since I need to do a Powerpoint presentation for my final product I thought it was better if I researched on how to do a interesting and striking powerpoint. I found a web page which gave me 10 tips for preparing a professional presentation. This are the tips.
1. Compose slides: Don’t copy & paste slides from different sources.Keep the design very basic and simple. It shall not distract.Pick an easy to read font face.Carefully select font sizes for headers and text.Leave room for highlights, such as images or take home messages.Decorate scarcely but well.Restrict the room your design takes up and don’t ever let the design restrict your message.
2. Use consistency: Consistently use the same font face and sizes on all slides. Match colors.
3. Use Contrast: Black text on a white background will always be the best but also the most boring choice. If you want to play with colors, keep it easy on the eyes and always keep good contrast in mind so that your readers do not have to strain to guess what you’ve typed on your slide.
4. Apply briliiance: Carefully use color to highlight your message!Don’t weaken the color effect by using too many colors at an instance.Make a brilliant choice: match colors for design and good contrast to highlight your message.
5. KISS: Keep It Straight and Simple. Keywords only.No sentences!Never read your slides, talk freely.
6. Take home message: Always express a Take Home Message. It’s your message, a summary of your data or story. Make it a highlight that stands out.
7. Add images: Have more images in your slides than text. But do not use images to decorate!Images can reinforce or complement your message.Use images to visualize and explain.A picture can say more than a thousand words.
8. Don't be silly: Use animations and media sparingly.Use animations to draw attention, for example to your Take Home Message.Use animations to clarify a model or emphasize an effect.
9. Keep Your Audience In Mind: What do they know? What do you need to tell them? What do they expect? What will be interesting to them? What can you teach them? What will keep them focused?Answer these questions and boil your slides down to the very essentials. In your talk, describe the essentials colorfully and choose your weapons i.e. text, images and animations wisely (see above).
10. Practice: Know your slides inside out.Speak freely.Speak with confidence – loud and clear.Don’t speak too fast. Maintain eye contact with the audience.
I will definetly use this tips tomorrow when I prepare my presentation. I also visited the personal project web page and on the Investigating-research I found out a word file which gave tips on how to do a proper survey. I will take into account this tips when I develop the survey structure.

30/03/15 - Creating presentation and survey for biomedical engineering students
Today I did the presentation and the survey for the presentation I will expose to students of biomedical engineering on the Universidad Autonoma de Occidente and I sent it to Dr. Wilfredo Agredo's Mail. It took me about 4-5 hours to finish everything and I am happy with the result. Thanks to the investigation I did yesterday I was able to do a good and well organized Powerpoint presentation taking into account many things such as keeping in mind what my audience could understand and the level of complexity the information should be. I also used many tips on how to the presentation more interesting such as adding images and diagrams, matching colors and deciding in which way was I going to organise the information in the powerpoint to achieve that the students have a better understanding of the topic. I decided that before I started to talk about the C-Brace I should give a small intro talking about my story and why I needed the help of the C-Brace to walk. The order of information in the Powerpoint was the following:

Many of the information is not written in the powerpoint (slides that only have photos) because I think it would be easier to understand if I explain it from my own understanding and knowledge. |
I also did the survey which I am planning to hand out after finishing the presentation. I used some tips I found on the research I did yesterday and this is how the survey:
Skills:
Creative thinking: I used this skill to Transfer and apply existing knowledge to generate the presentation for the final product.
Transfer: I used this skill to create the presentation using knowledge and skills gained across the stages of the personal project.
Organization: I structured information. appropriately in a written and visual way in the presentation and the survey.
Information literacy: I show this skill by Utilizing appropriate multimedia technology to create an effective presentation.
Media literacy: I Located, organized, analysed, evaluated, synthesized and efficiently used information from a variety of sources and media to add in the presentation.
Communication: I used this skill to organize information logically and to structure information correctly in summaries for the presentation.

02/04/15 - Criteria and rubric to evaluate product
Today I created a criteria and a rubric in order to self- evaluate my product. To create the criteria I had to take into account the form, function, user/audience and cost of the personal project and how these things should be done. To create the rubirc I had to take into account aesthetics, cost, user/audicene, function and content of the final product.
Skills: Critical thinking: I used this skill to break down large concepts and projects into component parts and combine parts logically as appropriate Organization: I used this skill to set appropriate management goals and plan strengths to achieve them. |

07/04/15 - Confirming presentation date
Today I called Dr. Wilfredo Agredo to ask him about a possible date for the presentation in the university and he told me that tomorrow was a perfect day since he had a class with students of biomedical engineering at the morning. He also told me that I did a good job with the Powerpoint and that it was suitable for the presentation to the students. I practiced the presentation with my parents until I knew it perfectly. I am very excited but Im sure I will do a good presentation
Skills:
Affective: I used this skill by practicing positive thinking. I also used this skill when I practiced the presentation because I practiced to focus and concentrate to overcome distractions while I present.

08/04/15 - Doing the final product (presentation about the C-Brace to biomedical engineering students)
Today was finally the day. I arrived to the university at 8:30 a.m to the biomedic lab and I did my presentation to a class of 9 students who studied biomedical engineering. My presentation lasted about 15 minutes but the whole class lwas of 45 minutes since after I finished the presentation the students and the teacher asked me many questions about the topic. It is important to mention that the teacher (Dr Wilfredo Agredo) asked many question to the students about the C-Brace technology and how would they employ it in a new orthotic. He also asked questions on which things could be changed in the C-Brace in order to make it cheaper so it could be possible for more people in colombia to have access to this technology. After the class was finished I handed in the surveys and the results were surprising. 5/9 didn't had knowledge of the C-Brace and it's technology and 9/9 students considered that the information of my presentation could be useful for their future career. This results make me feel satisfied of my presentation and of all the hard work I did for this personal project.

09/04/15 - Evaluating my product
Today I evaluated my final product. I think that the grades I gave to myselft are pretty fair since I feel I did a pretty good job on yesterdays presentation. This is how I graded the rubric:
Today I evaluated my final product. I think that the grades I gave to myselft are pretty fair since I feel I did a pretty good job on yesterdays presentation. This is how I graded the rubric:
Aesthetics (7/8): I gave myself 7/8 because I really think I did a good job with the PowerPoint presentation. I grade myself 7 and not 8 because I still think I could have added some little details to achieve that the students could get a better understanding.
Cost (6/8): I gave myself 6/8 because the presentation was 11 minutes long. I presented most of the information I was planning to present but due to the fact that I was nervous I forgot to mention some little aspects. The presentation was planned to be 15 minutes long. User/audience (8/8): I gave myself a 8/8 because I was able to present to the best audience possible which was to biomedical engineering students. Function (8/8): I gave myself a 8/8 and I really think I deserve that grade because I did a good job in teaching how the C-Brace worked, its functions and benefits on people that used it. It is also important to mention that 100% of the students thought the information could be useful for their future career. Size/content (8/8): I gave myself a 8/8 because I gave detailed and in depth information with Images, diagramas and even a demonstration. |
Skills:
Reflection: I used this skill to build understanding of personal learning strengths and weaknesses and be aware of areas of perceived limitation Creative thinking skills.
